Recruiter Spotlight : Andy Leng

We had an opportunity to sit down and speak with ROI Recruiter, Andrew (Andy) Leng this week. Andy is a recruiter in the Wethersfield, CT office in the Construction division. We talked about the power of transparency with clients and candidates and how to become a successful construction recruiter.

What makes ROI different from other staffing firms? Andy Leng

ROI builds true relationships with both our candidates and clients. From scheduling in-person meetings to our thorough screening process for candidates, everything is handled with care. Not many staffing firms meet candidates and clients face-to-face. In other firms, every step is transactional and to make a quick profit. ROI cares about the people they work with. We want to ensure our clients are satisfied with the candidate we send them, and the candidates are excited and happy with the work they are doing and the environment they are in.

How do you build relationships with your candidates and clients?

It is essential to go beyond the surface and understand the candidate and client. You can only do that by having real conversations with them. I speak to both candidates and clients regularly throughout the entire hiring process from the first interview to onboarding. What are the clients looking for? What skills does the candidate need to obtain? Beyond skill, what personal qualities are they looking for?

On the candidate side, what short-term and long-term goals do they have? Do they have flexibility requirements? Are they looking for a short-term project or more job stability? It is so important to be transparent about everything. I never want to place a candidate in an environment that doesn’t suit them, and I would never want to bring a client, a candidate I don’t have high expectations for.

What makes a successful recruiter?

Transparency and honesty are key to being a successful recruiter. If you want to build lasting relationships with clients and candidates, they need to trust your judgement. I am honest about what the role entails, the job expectations and the quality of the candidates.

You also need to be someone willing to network. Put yourself out there with confidence and get in front of clients. You have to stay hungry for work and be passionate in what you are doing. You must believe that you are making a difference and understand the importance of helping someone find a career.  It takes a dedicated person with a good heart and a strong work ethic to become a successful recruiter.

Why did you choose ROI?

What drew me to interview was the specialization in construction staffing, but what hooked me was the people. There is a special comradery here at ROI that is hard to explain. You feel like you are part of a team, something bigger than yourself. Everyone was so kind to me during my interview and they constantly spoke of the career growth opportunities. ROI’s company culture is so supportive, and I have truly never experienced anything like it at any other company I have worked for.

What are clients looking for in potential candidates? What are candidates looking for in an employer?

Clients are looking for workers who are passionate, honest, and hardworking. They are looking to us to find the person that thrives in their organizational culture and be a participating member of their team.

In the construction industry, tradespeople are looking for job stability. Many of our construction candidates want to find permanent work with a company that treats their people well.
