Job Description
A Civil Project Engineer plays a pivotal role in leading the design, coordination, and execution of complex civil engineering projects, from concept through construction. By applying technical expertise, project management skills, and a deep understanding of permitting processes and design standards, the engineer guides multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and compliant infrastructure solutions. Through effective communication, leadership, and collaboration with clients, agencies, and communities, the Civil Project Engineer contributes to both the immediate success of individual projects and the strategic growth of the firm.
DUTIES AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform and/or oversee civil engineering fieldwork, often directing the efforts of engineers, technicians, administrative staff, and subcontractors in a multidisciplinary team setting.
- Review and/or develop civil engineering reports, project documentation, progress updates, and contract materials.
- Lead the design of complete projects within the civil engineering practice area, including systems, components, or processes, while collaborating with a team of engineers and support staff to produce comprehensive project documents.
- Innovate and refine engineering methods, materials, or processes to enhance performance and efficiency.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and progress tracking for active assignments.
- Develop scopes of work, staffing estimates, timelines, budgets, and other proposal materials for new project opportunities.
- Participate in and present at interviews, project coordination meetings, and community engagement events.
- Represent projects to local and state permitting authorities, including zoning boards, planning commissions, and conservation commissions.
- Support business development initiatives and contribute to strategic planning efforts.
- Serve as a representative of the firm in community events, professional organizations, and industry functions.
- Perform other related duties as required.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program is required; a master’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Strong understanding of design standards and a commitment to continuous learning to stay current with industry trends and issues.
- Familiarity with standard civil design practices and relevant permitting regulations at the state and local levels.
- Practical knowledge of site construction methods, procedures, and best practices.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D is essential.
- LEED Accreditation or experience with sustainable design practices is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and interpersonal abilities for diverse audiences.
- High attention to detail and strong critical thinking abilities.
- Self-starter with a professional demeanor and a collaborative mindset.
- Active involvement in professional and/or community organizations is encouraged.
- A client-focused approach and a willingness to mentor junior staff are highly valued.
Pay Range: $80-90,000
