ROI SPOTLIGHT: Alana Cormier

Meet Alana Cormier, one of the newest members of our Wethersfield, CT construction recruiting team! Since joining ROI in February, Alana has brought a fresh perspective, strong marketing instincts, and a people-first mindset to every interaction. In this spotlight, she opens up about her journey into recruiting, the candidate story that’s stayed with her, and the career lessons that keep her growing. Let’s dig in!

What initially drew you to the recruiting field, and how did you get started at ROI?

I’m new to the recruiting field and didn’t know much about staffing firms beyond direct hire, so the project-based side was all new to me. I graduated with a degree in Marketing from the University of Maine in May of last year, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. I started exploring roles in sales and communications and even worked as a leasing agent, which I loved. The competitiveness of that job and the satisfaction of helping people find a place that fit their needs really stuck with me and it translates well into recruiting.

I also had a marketing internship focused on analytics, so I’ve always enjoyed combining data with personal interaction. This role feels like the perfect blend of both.

When I had my first phone call with Jesse, it left a strong impression. Then I met with Ales and Tim from our team, and I really appreciated how much time they took to answer any questions I had. They set clear expectations and helped me understand the role and the environment. I left those conversations feeling like this was not only a great fit, but a place where I could truly grow and thrive.

How do you stay motivated and maintain a high level of performance in your role?

I really enjoy being competitive with myself, and I’m grateful to be in such a motivating environment that encourages positive competition. There’s a real sense of reward that comes from being consistent, it not only pays off personally, but it also allows me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

What makes this job so rewarding is the opportunity to truly get to know people—their motivations, their struggles and to help connect them with opportunities that can change their lives. There’s nothing better than getting excited for a candidate and seeing them succeed in a role that fits them perfectly.

What has been your proudest moment helping a candidate since joining ROI?

Recently, I interviewed a skilled labor candidate who had recently been laid off and was trying to re-enter the workforce. He was new to the field and feeling frustrated, something I’ve also seen my friends experience. So many “entry-level” jobs still demand a lot of experience, which can be discouraging.

Although he could’ve pursued other paths, he had very specific goals in mind. We had a great first conversation, and I was able to connect him with a few short-term opportunities. Eventually, we landed on a long-term role that aligned with what he was looking for. I just spoke with him again on Monday, he’s thriving, and things are going really well.

What makes ROI different than other staffing firms? For candidates?

What stands out the most to me is how deeply we get to know our candidates and clients. It’s not transactional, it’s entirely relationship-driven. I felt that from my very first conversation with Jesse, and it immediately set the tone for what working at ROI is all about.

I haven’t been here long, but it’s been made clear from day one: success starts with understanding people. Not just what’s on their résumé or in a job description, but who they are, what they’re looking for, and how we can genuinely help them achieve their goals. That level of intentionality is something we bring to every conversation, and it shows in the results we deliver.

What’s even more meaningful is that ROI applies that same thoughtful approach internally. The care they take with clients and candidates is mirrored in how they build their own team. That says a lot about the culture here, and I’m proud to be part of it.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?

There are two lessons that have really stuck with me and shaped how I approach my work and growth.

The first might sound cliché, but it’s absolutely true: we learn the most from our mistakes. Every misstep is part of the learning process. Since this field is still new to me, I’ve found that what makes all the difference is the support you receive and the quality of the feedback. It’s not just encouraging, it’s practical and helps you grow in real, tangible ways.

The second is a mindset shift: swallow the frog. In other words, tackle the hardest, most challenging task first. Don’t let it sit on your to-do list and weigh you down. The same goes for helping others, if someone needs support, make that your priority. Taking care of those tougher things early clears the way for a smoother, more productive day.

Name 5 fun/interesting things about you!

  • I love painting, it’s one of my favorite creative outlets, even if I don’t always make enough time for it.
  • I live just east of the Wethersfield’s office, which means I’ve somehow lucked out with a commute where the sun never blinds me. Small wins!
  • Ever since I was a kid, grizzly bears have been my biggest fear… and yes, I’m still planning a trip to some national parks out west.
  • I can still rattle off 50 digits of pi from memory. Not sure why this stuck with me, but it did!
  • My boyfriend and I have two cats, Jupiter, a black cat, and Chaka, a fluffy Siberian.
