We had the pleasure of chatting with Ashton Bardzell, an Account Manager in ROI’s West Caldwell, New Jersey office, who specializes in the environmental sector. Ashton shared his journey into recruiting and how he’s passionate about more than just finding jobs for candidates—he’s focused on finding the right job while building strong, meaningful relationships that last.
1. What initially drew you to the recruiting field, and how did you get started ROI?
One of my best friends from college and now colleague, Rob Carmody, got me into the field. He’s now a Divisional Manager at the Massachusetts office. Early in his career, I saw how quickly he moved up, taking on various roles and building something of his own—almost like running his own business within a larger company. Watching him connect with candidates and truly understand their needs gave me confidence in my own abilities. It taught me the importance of getting on the same page with candidates, being serious about their job search, and meeting them where they are to fully support them.
2. How do you stay motivated and maintain a high level of performance in your role?
Motivation doesn’t always come easy, but staying consistent and focused on my career goals is key. I approach each day with the mindset of doing the right things, even when motivation isn’t at its peak. I hold myself to high standards because I know that pushing through and putting in the work, even on tough days, leads to great results. It’s about understanding what you need to do for the long-term success of your career.
What I truly love is working with people, helping them not just find a job, but the right fit. It’s about connecting quality individuals with positions that align with their strengths and needs, ensuring they thrive in the roles they take on.
3. What has been your proudest moment helping a candidate or client since joining ROI?
I worked closely with a candidate over several months, building a strong relationship as he relied on us to help him secure a position. While the first few attempts didn’t pan out, we didn’t give up, and on the third try, he landed a full-time job. He pushed through adversity, and now he’s thriving.
Another candidate came to us from out of state, eager to break into a new industry but lacking experience and the necessary certifications. We guided him through the process, helping him get the right training and license, which ultimately led to a full-time position. This was about more than just advancing his career—it was about improving his life. Since then, we’ve maintained that relationship, continuing to find him new opportunities and supporting his growth.
4. What makes ROI different than other staffing firms? For candidates/clients?
At ROI, we believe in building relationships the right way—face to face. Whether it’s dropping off coffee in the morning or checking in throughout the interview and onboarding process, we ensure both clients and candidates experience a smooth and personalized journey. We don’t just match resumes to job descriptions; we take the time to truly know our candidates, ensuring they are a perfect fit for our clients. It’s more than placing people—it’s about creating meaningful connections and making sure everyone is supported every step of the way.
5. What is the best career advice you have ever received?
One thing that has always stayed with me is the importance of staying present. It’s easy to get caught up in what’s ahead, but you can’t let the future dictate your present—or even overshadow your past. Instead, focus on the here and now, and make the most of this moment. Concentrate on what you can control, and let go of the things you can’t.
6. Name 5 fun/interesting things about you
- I’ve played baseball my entire life, but I recently picked up golf just six months ago and already scored my first hole-in-one!
- I love staying active—working out and keeping healthy are top priorities for me.
- I’m always striving to grow, whether it’s by listening to podcasts or learning new perspectives.
- My favorite vacation spot is El Salvador. My dad and I have been going there for the past few years, and we’re heading back again this October.
- My favorite food is Sushi—specifically a Manhattan Roll!
