ROI Spotlight: Cameron McCleary

Meet Cameron McCleary, a dedicated Recruiter in ROI’s New York office, specializing in the Construction and Design (CAD) division. In this interview Cameron explains his approach to recruiting is all about building meaningful relationships and fostering open communication, as well as why he chose to work for ROI and what makes them different from other staffing firms.

What initially drew you to the recruiting field, and how did you get started ROI?

Four years ago, I didn’t know much about recruiting, but a friend suggested I try it when an opportunity opened up. That suggestion led me into the world of recruiting, where I discovered my passion for building connections and engaging with people.

Last summer, I received a message from Chet, which led to a 30-minute call that left a strong impression on me. The conversation was engaging, and I was immediately drawn to the opportunities at ROI. Although I had a few offers on the table, I chose ROI because it aligns perfectly with my long-term career goals, offering pathways for advancement that I’ve been eager to pursue.

How do you stay motivated and maintain a high level of performance in your role?

I’ve had a successful journey in my recruiting career, and the potential for growth and new opportunities continue to fuel my motivation. I’m focused on building my own path within this business, and the promise of advancing and evolving with ROI drives me to stay committed and deliver my best, no matter the challenges around me.

What has been your proudest moment helping a candidate or client since joining ROI?

About a month ago, I had a candidate who was excited about a new position we helped him secure. Unfortunately, the role didn’t provide him with many hours, which left him feeling a bit disheartened. Determined to find a better opportunity for him, I reached out to several companies in his area. Eventually, I connected with a company that saw his potential and was eager to bring someone like him on board. Today, he’s working full 40-hour weeks, gaining valuable skills, and growing within the company. He expressed his deep gratitude to both me and ROI, not only for supporting him but also for placing him in a role where he can continue to learn and excel in his craft.

What makes ROI different than other staffing firms? For candidates/clients?

On the candidate side, we take the time to build deep, meaningful relationships. I make it a priority to stay in touch with candidates throughout the process, understanding their needs and aspirations. Recruiting often gets a bad reputation for being inconsistent, but I ensure they are constantly updated. It’s about having someone who is genuinely on your side.

On the client side, I focus on consistent follow-up and staying top-of-mind. Whenever I connect with a client, it’s not just about business; it’s about nurturing a genuine relationship. This approach ensures that when the time comes, we’re not just service providers, but trusted partners.ROI Spotlight

What is the best career advice you have ever received?

Jesse Odell, a great friend and coworker, has always emphasized the importance of open, honest conversations. His approach to being real and transparent has profoundly impacted my recruiting career at ROI. In this industry, it’s crucial to remember that candidates are more than just profiles—they’re real people with lives and struggles. By being genuine and truthful, we can build stronger, more meaningful connections that are appreciated on both sides.
