We spoke with Consulting and Design Recruiter, Chase Corcoran, working in the Needham office about why working with ROI is valuable and how they are different from other recruiting firms.
1. What made you decide to work for ROI?
I have a degree in Finance and started my career working for a mortgage company. It felt impersonal and not my speed, so I began actively looking for a new job after a year. A friend of mine from high school, Robert Abbott, was working for ROI as a recruiter. Rob described how different ROI was compared to other companies. He described how inviting and motivating the entire staff was, and how it feels like you are a part of something bigger. I was intrigued, so I went into the Needham office to meet the team. He was right. The atmosphere at ROI is unmatched. Everyone welcomed me and made me feel so comfortable. I knew I was in the right place. I did not have a construction background but was willing to learn the industry. I loved the upward mobility and the opportunity to create your own destiny. If you put in the work, you will succeed. The people that make up ROI from the very top to the bottom are always encouraging, willing to speak with you, and assist in any way. Where else can you say you have access to the top leaders in a company?
When I got the job offer, I immediately accepted, and it has been the best decision for my career.
2. What advice do you give to candidates? How do you prepare them for interviews?
After I thoroughly interview each candidate, getting to know their skills, career goals, timeline, personality, and interests, I describe the position in depth and ask if it is a job worth pursuing. If they are interested and the hiring manager wants to conduct a formal interview, I make sure to build their confidence. A candidate’s first impression is so important. The job search is difficult to maneuver on your own, and I want to make sure the candidates I work with go into interviews fully prepared. I always send them links to the company’s website, and provide them with any additional information they should know about the role. I always suggest candidates are prepared to ask questions about the company and showcase their eagerness to be part of the team.
Once I have the information on who they are interviewing with, I provide them with the name of the interviewer, the time, date and location of the interview. Interviewing is nerve wracking, but confidence is key. If they have made it to the interview that means they are highly qualified and a true candidate for the job, they must believe that. This is where ROI comes in, we build their confidence, make sure they are ready and at their best before their interview.
3. How is ROI different from other firms?
ROI is a family-owned, niche company. We are focused on the Northeast and all of our recruiters live where we are recruiting from. We have roots here and aren’t calling you from across the country to place you in an area we know nothing about. We are locally based, and because of that, we have the ability to build real relationships with both our clients and candidates. We are able to meet candidates and hiring managers in person. We are focused on finding them the best fit and able to shake their hand when they get the job of their dreams. Many times, I’ll meet my candidate on site for their first day, and continue making visits months after to ensure they are still happy. I want to support them and keep the relationship strong. Quality relationships are at the epicenter of our values.
4. Why is working with a recruiter valuable compared to trying to find a job on your own?
I was in the job market searching for something new and it was tough, so I understand the job seeker’s struggle. You spend hours a day applying for a hundred positions on job boards and get zero responses. Your resume sits on an HR desk for months. If you’re employed, you work at least 40 hours a week and then come home and put in more time applying for new jobs. If you’re unemployed, it is a race against the clock to get your income back. We are sending your resume directly to a hiring manager that we have a relationship with. We typically get a response within 24 to 48 hours of sending your resume. We get your foot in the door and do all the leg work. We are in direct contact with hiring managers and know exactly what they are looking for. When we submit a candidate for consideration, we’re confident they are the right match. Working with an ROI recruiter gives you peace of mind. I am sending resumes, setting up calls and advocating for your employment. Partnering with an ROI recruiter takes the stress out of the job search and properly prepares you for the interview.
5. What is something you have learned while working for ROI?
Building connections is so valuable, whether at the office with our internal team, on a job site or in an interview with a candidate or hiring manager. Meeting new people adds so much value to your life. Even if a candidate is not the right fit for the job I am trying to fill, making the connection is always going to be valuable. Maybe in 6-10 months I will have a position available that is perfect for them, and it is the career of their dreams. You can make a relationship with just about anybody and it helps you grow both professionally and personally.
