ROI Spotlight : Henry Cormier

We had the pleasure of catching up with Henry Cormier, an Account Manager at the Massachusetts office in the Environmental Division. We talked about how important it is for recruiters to build relationships with their candidates and clients.

1. What brought you to ROI?

After I graduated with my degree in Environmental Science, I did not have a clear career trajectory. I knew I wanted to be on the business side of environmental science versus out in the field, but I did not see staffing as a potential career path at the time. Barclay Gammill, my friend from college and now manager, reached out to me to become a recruiter at ROI in the Environmental Division.
It is fulfilling to have a job that combines my love for sales and business, while staying connected to the environmental Industry.

2. What does ROI do differently than other firms?

ROI believes in building strong connections with its candidates and clients. The relationships we build with them are genuine. We would never send a candidate to a job interview without fully vetting them and making sure they are qualified to uphold the position. We always meet with candidates in-person. With the advancements in technology and internet, many recruiters skip this step to save time and try to make quick placements, but we know how important it is to meet with candidates face-to-face. In- person meetups allow us to really get to know the applicant. Do they have the right personality for the work culture in question? Do they seem trustworthy? Do they have the right skillsets and personality for the job but lack the confidence to perform well in their interview with the hiring manager?
Interacting with candidates allows us to fully gauge if a candidate is the right fit for the job. We don’t stop meeting with the candidate once they are placed. We have all heard horror hiring stories about recruiters that don’t contact candidates once they get hired. ROI takes your success personally. We want to ensure you are confident and ready from your very first interview to your first day on the job. Many times, we will show up to the job site on a candidate’s first day to make sure they are prepared and feel comfortable. We coach applicants through the hiring process and cheer for every victory along their career journeys.

3. How do you create success for your candidates/clients

I never want to put my candidate in a position where they end up unsuccessful and I never want a client to feel like we have placed someone that is not the right fit for the job. In order for both parties to win it requires preparation on the recruiter’s part.
Not only do we vet candidates in-person, but we also visit job sites to meet with clients routinely. How can you truly understand what a client is looking for if you don’t understand the culture of the company? I take the time to meet with hiring managers to interview them for clarity on the job detail and inquire about their expectations for the candidate.
This not only benefits the clients but allows us to only partner with quality companies that care for their employees. We would never want to bring a hiring manager a candidate that is unqualified or lacks the skills needed for the job. In the same regards, we would never want to place a candidate in an environment that was cruel to their employees.
Our clients are all looking for people that want to grow their careers with them. The hiring process can be expensive and time consuming when there is a constant revolving door of workers. That is why we want to make sure we get it right for the candidate and the client the first time.

4. Who has made an impact on you as a professional and why?

Jon Abplanalp, our team leader, has really impacted me in a positive way professionally. He was the first person I spoke with at ROI, and he mapped out what I needed to do to grow in my career path. He instilled confidence in me and really let me find my rhythm in this business. He is always encouraging and when a problem needs to be addressed, he is always constructive and helps me find a positive solution.
This is true for the entire leadership team at ROI. Everyone is invested in your growth as a professional and they give you the time and the tools to be successful in this business. I hope as I grow with ROI, I can utilize my experiences to have a positive impact on new hires, just as Jon and the entire leadership team has done for me.
