We recently sat down with Jim Marasco, a recruiter in our Massachusetts Consulting and Design, North Division based out of the Needham Office, to learn more about his journey into staffing, what motivates him, and what makes ROI’s approach to recruiting truly stand out. From his start in the industry to the work ethic that fuels his success, Jim’s story is a great reminder of how passion, persistence, and people-first values come together in the world of recruiting.
What initially drew you to the recruiting field, and how did you get started at ROI?
After finishing school, I wasn’t entirely sure which direction to take my business degree. Around that time, my girlfriend landed a job in life sciences recruiting, and as she shared more about her experience, it really sparked my interest. I started exploring opportunities on LinkedIn, looking into Boston-based staffing firms, and recruiting just made sense to me, it combined business, people, and purpose.
That’s when I connected with Chris Kuppens, who gave me an intro to ROI and a brief but impactful call that really stuck with me. Shortly after, I interviewed with Mike Shea and meeting him in person solidified everything. He was so genuine; it felt less like an interview and more like a conversation with someone who really believed in the work and the people. That authenticity came through loud and clear and continues to define my experience here. I joined in September 2024, and what’s stood out the most is how ROI truly supports its team from the top down. I have friends in other industries who don’t feel that kind of encouragement from their leadership, but at ROI, it’s built into the culture.
How do you stay motivated and maintain a high level of performance in your role?
It starts with the leadership team and mentors. The energy they bring every day is contagious, it makes a huge difference. I never dread coming into work. Instead, I feel motivated and inspired by the people around me. Everyone’s pushing each other to grow, and that momentum is hard not to feed off. There’s always something to look forward to and knowing that I’m helping someone take the next step in their career keeps me going.
What has been your proudest moment helping a candidate or client since joining ROI?
One that really stands out is a recent placement I made for a maintenance technician role. The client had been struggling tofind the right fit for a while, several candidates had come through, but none quite made it across the finish line. I was determined to get it done, and after putting in the time and effort, I finally found the perfect match. The candidate is now thriving in the role, and the client couldn’t be happier. It was a proud moment for me because I knew how much work had gone into it, and the payoff was worth every second.
What makes ROI different from other staffing firms, candidates and clients?
It’s all about relationships. At ROI, we truly prioritize human-to-human connection. We don’t just place candidates, we meet them, get to know them face-to-face, and spend time understanding who they are and what they’re looking for. The same goes for our clients. We meet them on-site, have real conversations, and build trust that goes far beyond transactional job orders.
In an industry that often relies on phone calls and emails, we go deeper because of our regional, high-touch approach. That in-person connection creates long-lasting partnerships, and not a lot of firms are doing that the way we are.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Two pieces stand out:
- “Nothing is given, everything is earned.”
That came from my parents and it’s a mindset I live by. It helped me during my interview at ROI and continues to shape my approach every day. I know if I want something, I have to go after it and earn it. - “Excuses are lies.”
That one came from my college baseball coach, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It reminds me that making excuses only holds me back from reaching my full potential.
